how can i retrieve my picture files from my sd/mmc when it says "this card cannot be used"?

my friend just took one photo and when she handed it back to me, it said that "this card cannot be used". i let a girl from kodak check it and she said it was either formatted or all the pics were deleted. i need help. where can i take it? i also downloaded PhotoOne Recovery but the status of my memory card is "Not Ready". where can i have this fixed and how? can i still retrieve the pics?
