Question by Katie: What does it mean when you format your memory card on a digital camera?
I have a Canon Powershot A540 and when I accidently hit format memory card all my pictures were deleted! The only good thing is I got them all on my computer before they got deleted. What does it mean to format a memory card. Is the memory card all messed up now?

It erases anything on the card and prepares the file directory structure needed by your camera and the PC.

It wll work just fine, but as you said the pictures that were on it are deleted forever. Formatting the card is a fast way to delete all of the pictures while the card is in the camera.
